초록[abstracts]
[본 글은 생명윤리학의 이론적 측면에서 자유주의적 개인주의 시각이 확산된 계기 중 하나가 1979년 톰 비첨(Tom L. Beauchamp)과 제임스 췰드리스(James F. Childress)의 공저인 『생명의료윤리의 원칙들(Principles of Biomedical Ethics)』의 영향력에 기인하고 있다고 본다. 이 책에서 비첨과 췰드리스는 자율성존중, 해악금지, 선행, 정의의 원칙을 제시하였고, 이 네 가지 원칙들은 생명윤리의 중요한 원칙들로 자리 잡았다. 하지만 필자는 네 원칙들의 주요 개념에 대한 정의(definition)와 논의의 범주가 모두 협소하게 개인에게만 한정되어 있다는 점에서 이 네 원칙들이 ‘자유주의적 개인주의 원칙들’이라고 평가한다. 그리고 네 원칙들의 주요 개념 정의와 논의의 범주가 협소하게 개인에게 맞춰 있어 많은 생명윤리적 문제들을 개인의 선택의 문제로 환원시킬 뿐만 아니라 사회적 영향력이나 공동선의 중요성을 쉽게 간과한다는 문제점을 지적할 것이다. 필자는 구체적이고 현실적인 삶 속에서 제기되는 복잡한 생명윤리적 문제들에 대해 비첨과 췰드리스의 네 가지 원칙들이 실질적인 지침의 역할을 수행하기 위해서는 네 원칙들의 주요 개념에 대한 정의와 논의의 범주를 개인을 넘어서서 사회를 포함하는 공동체주의적 시각으로 재해석될 필요가 있음을 주장한다.
In this paper, it is said that one of the reasons for the proliferation of liberal individualism in the theoretical aspect of bioethics is the influence of the 『Principles of Biomedical Ethics』 co‐authored by Tom L. Beauchamp and James F. Childress in 1979. In the book, Beauchamp and Childress presented the principles of respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and justice, and these four principles have become important principles of bioethics. However, I consider these four principles to be "principles of liberal individualism" in that both the definitions and the categories of discussion on the main concepts of the four principles are narrowly confined to individuals. And I point out the issues that the main concept definition of and the category of discussion of the four principles of Beauchamp and Childress are narrowly tailored to the individuals, which not only reduce many bioethical problems to the problem of individual choice but also easily overlook the importance of social influence or common good. I should say that the definition of and the category of discussion on the main concepts of four principles of Beauchamp and Childress need to be reinterpreted as a communitarian view that includes society beyond the individual in order for the four principles of Beauchamp and Childress to serve as a practical guideline for the complex bioethical issues raised in concrete and realistic lives]
