초록[abstracts]
[This paper examines the so-called ‘three characteristics of life’ asserted in artificial life theory: spontaneous motility, reproduction ability, and self-reflection ability, while reflecting the distinctiveness of human body on the basis of abovementioned characteristics. Do man have a body and a mind, or a somatic mind or a mentalized body? This paper probes this question through the concept of body being ’incarnated spirit,’ claimed by the modern philosopher Max Scheler. Here, mind is a self-reflecting ability of humankind, in his theory of stratification. Scheler delineates the four hierarchial forms of life; the first ‘impulsive’ form, belonging to the plantlike, followed by ‘instinctual’ stage, present in simplest forms of animal life, then ‘habitual’ stage, expressed in more developed animals, and the fourth stage, ‘practical intelligence’, incorporated in highest forms of animals. Moon Sung Hak agrees with Sheler, and points out self-targeting ability as a characteristic of human mind. He further claims that in human body life and death coexists, and that man is the unity of mind and body. Through these discussions, this paper considers human beings as a unity of mind and body, possessing a special psychic ability of objectification. The implications of this argument are as follows: today some theoretically hypothesize that in the future we can live eternal life by uploading memories, or can live eternally by rotating physical body. These assumptions are becoming more and more actualized by the technological advance. Human is either a somatic mind or a mentalized body. In other words, if there is no interaction between these two notions, separated only as 'mind' or 'body', man can no longer be viewed as a complete human life. However, it does not mean that as human being we may ignore or disrespect the incomplete human life, but rather means that such life should require different kinds of respect based on Scheler's theory of stratification.
현대의 ‘인공생명(人工生命-Artificial Life)’에 관한 논의에는 생명체가 갖는 양상이 추상화되어 있다. 인공생명론에서 생명체는 1)자발적(自發的) 운동성(voluntary motility), 2)재생산(再生産) 능력(reproductive ability), 3)자기반성(自己反省) 능력(self-reflection ability)을 갖는다. 이 특성은 생명으로서의 인간도 마찬가지로 지닌다. 이 중 인간에게 있는 자기반성능력은 정신(精神)’이라 할 수 있겠다. 만약 인간만이 고유하게 갖는다고 여기는 자기반성능력으로서의 정신을, 어떤 인공적인 생명체가 지닌다면 우리는 그 존재를 인격체로 간주해야 할 것이다. 그런데 자기반성능력만을 지닌 인공적인 존재가 있을 경우에, 우리가 그 존재를 인격체로 대우할 수 있을런지는 논의꺼리이다. 왜냐하면 인류 역사 상 인격체는 언제나 신체를 가진 존재였기 때문이다. 이러한 전제로 말미암아, 오랜 서구철학의 역사에서 인간이 과연 단 하나의 실체(實體-substantial thing)를 갖는지, 두 종류의 실체를 갖는지는 논쟁점이 되어왔다. 다시 말해, 과연 인간이 신체와 정신을 갖는지, 신체적 정신 또는 정신적 신체를 갖는지는 지속되어 온 논쟁점이다. 현대철학자 셸러(Max Scheler)는 신체를 정신화 된 것으로 본다. 즉, 우리가 가진 신체는 정신이 드러난 형태이며 정신은 신체를 통해 나타난다는 것이다. 본 논문은 셸러의 ‘육화된 정신’(The Body as ’Physicalized Spirit’)으로서의 신체 개념에 관해 살펴본다. 그리고 이러한 셸러의 사상을 문성학의 자기대상화(self-object)를 가능하게 하는 인간정신의 특성에 관한 정리를 통해 고찰해 보고 있다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 눈부신 기술의 발전에 따라 변용(變容-affection)해가는 인간생명의 두 측면 즉 신체와 정신에 관한 이해를 도모하고 있다.]
