초록[abstracts]
[과학지식이 야기하는 ‘무의미성’을 어떻게 삶의 가치로 변환할 수 있을까? 생명 과학의 키워드인 유전자는 교양교육에 ‘과학지식’과 ‘가치’의 연결이라는 문제를 던져준다. 유전자 논쟁의 핵심에 있는 『이기적 유전자』는 과학지식을 수용하는 데 결정론을 넘어서는 상상력이라는 새로운 틀이 필요하다는 것을 시사해준다. 생명 과학은 유전 ‘정보’와 생물학적 ‘의미’ 사이의 틈새를 확장해왔다. 생명은 유전자의 인과적 산물이 아니며, 생명시스템 전체가 관여하는 복잡한 과정이라는 것이 밝혀지고 있다. 유전자는 우연과 필연이 교차되는 진화라는 대서사시의 주인공이다. 진화라는 거대한 시간 안에서 개체는 필연적으로 종으로서의 안정성에 복무한다. 하지만 개체의 시간은 우연한 선택들과 변화로 채워져 있으며, 이러한 가변성이 축적되며, 진화의 계기가 만들어진다. 진화의 거대한 시간을 상상하고 이를 바탕으로 개체에게 주어진 가능성의 시간을 사유할 수 있어야 유전자를 삶의 의미로 연결할 수 있다. 필연을 우연으로 만들고 존재를 당위로 만드는 생명의 여정은 유전자에 대한 상상력을 촉발시키며 유전자를 하나의 이야기로 사유해보게 한다. 유전자를 고전과 연결하여 운명과 선택의 이야기로 이해해보는 과정은 존재와 당위를 연결하며 상상력을 실천해보는 한 방법이다. 유전자는 과학의 시대가 우리에게 부여한 운명의 새로운 얼굴이다. 유전자는 스핑크스처럼 삶의 문을 지키며, 많은 것을 결정한다. 하지만 개체는 유전자라는 데이터베이스를 바탕으로, 자기 삶을 새롭게 직조한다. 유전자는 우리가 물질에서 기원하지만, 동시에 자신의 개별적 이야기를 구성해가는 특별한 존재라는 역설을 마주하게 해준다. 교양교육은 우주의 변방으로 추방된 인간으로 하여금 돌아가야 할 자리를 새롭게 상상하게 해야 한다. 그리고 과학지식을 삶의 가치로 전환시키는 ‘인간적 과학’의 영역을 탐색해야 한다.
Genes are raising new questions about human identity and making people think about how to accept scientific knowledge in General education. The Selfish Gene explains the evolution of altruism from a gene-centered view. Richard Dawkins’s argument is interpreted as genetic determinism, generating anxiety and moral criticism about the genes that make us. Determinism constricts new scientific knowledge into a framework of the past, and keeps knowledge from leading to meaning. The gene-centered view assumes that entities are survival “machines” for their genes through the geological time and space of evolution. However, the logic of explaining the time required for evolution is different from the logic of time for a specific entity. Biology has expanded the gap between genetic “information” and biological “meaning.” Life is not a causal output of genes but a complicated process in which the entire system is involved. Genes can convey the meaning of life only when we imagine the immense time of evolution and, based on this, think about the time of possibilities given to the entity. The process of linking genes to the classics and understanding it as a story of fate and choice is one way to connect existence to what should occur, and to actually practice imagination. Genes are the new face of fate given to us by the era of science. Genes are, like the sphinx, “monsters” guarding the doors to life and the determination of many things. However, the lives of entities have recently been constructed based on databases. The main characters of Oedipus Tyrannus read the scripts of fate in their own ways. The story of genes links the scientific knowledge of genes more specifically to the meaning of life. Genes let us face the paradox that, while we originate from substance, we are also special beings that form our own invidious history. Understanding this feeble balance is humane. General education must explore the field of humane science so that humans banished to the frontiers of the universe can reimagine the place to where they must return.]
