초록[abstracts]
[본 논문은 Lam-rim(『도차제』)의 내용을 중심으로 죽음 억념의 필요성을 살펴보고 그 가르침을 바탕으로 바르도의 이해를 통한 죽음준비교육의 내용을 고찰하였다. 밀교수행을 위해 현교의 교학적 이해와 수행의 내용이 전제되어야 한다는 것은 밀교체계가 현교의 그것까지 포함한다는 것을 의미한다. 이 논문에서 티벳불교의 바르도를 다루면서 Lam-rim에 주목한 이유는 바로 이러한 체계구성에 근거한다. 죽음에 대한 억념과 삼악도에 윤회하는 고통은 下士道에서 설명되고 三善道에서의 삶이 영원하지 않다는 것은 中士道에서 설명된다. 사대요소의 소멸이 외적인 죽음을 말한다면 밀교적 이해는 내적인 죽음상태와 관련되어 설명된다. 티벳불교에서 바르도의 가르침은 모든 과정에서 매 순간마다 깨어있고 알아차릴 것을 강조한다. 그리고 상황을 직시함으로써 진실한 세계를 볼 수 있는 기회를 얻을 수 있다는 점을 말한다. 밀교에서는 죽음을 부정적인 것이 아니라 종교적 완성을 위한 또 다른 기회로 설명한다. 죽음의 과정을 포함하여 우리가 경험하는 매 순간이 성불의 기회가 될 수 있다. 임종과 죽음을 대하는 태도를 이러한 긍정적 관점으로 제시한다는 점에서 밀교의 임종론은 죽음준비교육에 유용하게 이용될 수 있을 것이다.
This study examines the necessity of meditation on death in Lam-rim and investigates death education through understanding Bardo on the basis of the teaching. The understanding of teachings and practices of Exoteric Buddhism is an essential prerequisite for practices of Esoteric Buddhism and this means that the system of Esoteric Buddhism includes that of Exoteric Buddhism. This is why this study focuses Lam-rim for examining Bardo in Tibetan Buddhism. The meditation on death and the sufferings of Samsara are explained in the lower level. The teaching about the finitude of the lives in three good paths is explained in the intermediate level. The extinction of four great material elements which are earth, water, fire and air is connected with external death and the death in Esoteric Buddhism is internal death. Bardo in Exoteric Buddhism is regarded as an important opportunity for attaining enlightenment. The teachings of Bardo in Tibetan Buddhism emphasize that we have to be aware of the position or state of affaires every moment and we can get the opportunity to awaken to the truth. The death in Esoteric Buddhism is not negative but positive because it can be another opportunity for us to attain spiritual fulfillment. The view point of death and dying in Esoteric Buddhism can be very helpful to death education because it has a positive attitude about death.]
