초록[abstracts]
[지난 여러 해 동안 죽음에 관한 책들이 많이 쏟아져 나오고 있으며, 죽음에 관한 관심이 사회적으로 크게 증대한 상황 속에서 2012년에 출판된 셸리 케이건의 『죽음이란 무엇인가』(Death)는 죽음에 관한 철학적 접근 및 성찰을 대중적으로 확산시켰다. 그런데 이 책에서 케이건은 죽음에 대한 자신의 입장을 분명하게 진술하는데, 그에게 따르면 죽음은 “삶의 끝”이고, “삶의 소멸”이다. 케이건의 입장을 더 구체적으로 살펴보자면, 첫째, 인간은 육체와 영혼으로 구성되어 있지 않고 오로지 육체만이 존재한다. 둘째, 영혼은 존재하지 않으며 “영혼”/“정신”이라는 용어는 인간 육체가 지니는 고차원적 기능들을 가리키는 개념적 도구일 뿐이다. 셋째, 죽음은 끝이고 소멸이기에 죽음 이후의 영원한 생명, 즉 영생의 개념을 논하는 것은 불필요하다. 넷째, 죽음에 대한 바람직한 태도는 죽음을 인정하며 신중하게 살아가는 것이다. 케이건의 이러한 입장은 기독교 신학과는 매우 다르다. 그리스도인은 예수 그리스도의 죽음을 묵상하되 그 이후의 부활을 묵상하면서, 우리에게도 엄연히 죽음이 있을 것이지만 그것이 최종적인 끝이 아니라 장차 죽은 자의 부활이 있을 것임을 확신하고 기대하고 소망한다. 그러기에 본 논문에서는 케이건의 죽음에 대한 입장을 분석하고 정리한 후에, 신학적으로 비판하고 응답하고자 한다. 더 구체적으로, 케이건의 인간관으로서의 물리주의, 그의 “정신”/“영혼”관, 그의 영생관 그리고 “삶의 끝”으로서의 죽음에 대한 그의 태도를 정리하고, 각각에 관하여 신학적으로 비판하고 응답하고자 한다. 이 논문에서의 이러한 논의를 통하여 독자들이 기독교 신학에서의 죽음과 부활과 영생의 개념들을 더 분명하게 발견할 수 있을 것이라고 기대한다.,
There have been many books on death for the last several years. In the midst of recent growing interests in death, Shelly Kagan’s Death, published in 2012, has spread a philosophical approach or reflection on death publicly. However, this book provides Kagan’s own distinct position on death, which argues that death is “an end of life” and “extinction of life.” To examine Kagan’s position on death in more detail, first, a human being does not consist of body and soul, but consists of body alone. Second, soul does not exist, and the terms such as “soul” and “mind” are only conceptional tools which refer to some higher functions of human body. Third, as death is an end and extinction, we do not need to talk about an idea of eternal life. Fourth, an appropriate attitude towards death is to recognize death and to live carefully. Kagan’s position on death is very different from that of Christian theology. Christians meditates not only the death of Jesus Christ, but also the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And they not only recognize that death is sure to come for all people, but also expect that death is not the final end, with a great hope that there would be the resurrection of the dead. Thus this paper makes an attempt to analyze Kagan’s position on death, together with a theological criticism and response to it. More specifically, this paper tries to investigate Kagan’s anthropology as physicalism, his understanding of “mind”/“soul,” his idea of eternal life, and his attitude towards death as “an end of life.” And then this paper provides a theological criticism and response to his position on death. Through this discussion in this paper, it is expected that we could be aware of Christian theological ideas of death, resurrection and eternal life more clearly.]
