초록[abstracts]
본 연구의 목적은 비혼모의 출산 및 양육 경험을 주관적인 삶의 맥락에서 탐색하는 것이다. 우리 사회는 결혼제도를 전제로 한 출산만 정당성이 부여되며, 비혼 여성의 임신은 실수나 잘못, 사고로 여기고 비난해왔다. 비혼모는 인공임신중절이나 자녀를 입양 보내는 것이 자신의 문제에 대해 책임지는 것이었다. 하지만 비혼모에 대한 비난과 낙인 속에서도 자녀를 출산하여 양육하는 것을 자신의 책임으로 받아들이고 홀로 자녀를 양육하는 비혼모들이 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 자녀를 양육하고 있는 비혼모들에게 출산과 양육은 어떤 경험이었는지에 관심을 두면서, 이들의 경험을 깊이 이해해 보고자 한다. 본 연구는 자녀를 양육하고 있는 만 24세 이상의 비혼모들과 심층 인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 또한, 본 연구는 성인인 비혼모의 출산 및 양육 경험을 주목하므로 연구 참여자들은 모두 임신 당시 연령이 20세 이상이다. 본 연구의 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 비혼모는 어떠한 맥락에서 비혼모가 되었는가? 비혼모는 임신 이후 경험은 어떠한가? 비혼모에게 양육은 어떠한 경험인가? 본 연구를 통해 밝혀진 것은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 비혼모들은 자녀를 낳아 양육하기로 하는 것과 더불어 자녀의 생물학적 아버지와의 관계를 정리함으로써 비혼모의 삶을 살게 된다. 관계정리는 자녀의 생물학적 아버지에 의해 이루어지기도 하지만, 때로는 비혼모가 관계를 먼저 정리하고자 결정하기도 하였다. 둘째, 비혼모들은 임신함으로써 고립된 상황을 겪어내는 것으로 나타났다. 비혼모들이 고립된 상황에 놓이는 과정은 달랐지만, 정서적으로 지지를 얻거나 정보나 의견을 나누기 어려웠으며, 경제적‧물질적 어려움마저 복합적으로 얽혀있는 고립상태로 심화되기도 하였다. 셋째, 비혼모의 양육 경험은 자녀와 함께 살아갈 보금자리를 마련하며, 일과 양육을 병행하고자 시도하는 것이다. 비혼모에게 양육을 대신해 줄 수 있는 자원은 거처 마련과 일‧양육 병행을 수월하게 해주었다. 대체 양육 자원이 부족할수록 비혼모는 당장 취업보다는 미래를 준비하거나 계획을 세우는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로, 본 연구의 결과를 통해서 볼 때, 비혼모들의 개인 배경이나 특성에 따라 경험의 시기나 과정에 다소 차이가 나타났지만, 연구 참여자들은 비혼모로서 공통적인 경험을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 비혼모의 출산 및 양육 경험은 관계 단절과 자원 부족으로 고립을 경험할 수 있으며, 대체양육 자원의 부족으로 경제활동을 미루는 것으로 나타났다.
초록[abstracts]
The purpose of this study is to explore the single mothers’ experiences of childbirth and caring in the context of their lives. In South Korea, only childbirth of married women gains the legitimacy from the society. Unmarried women have been blamed for being pregnancy. Moreover, single mothers have been forced to have an abortion or adopt their children. Recently, despite the criticism and stigmatization of single mothers, there has been an increase in the number of singe mothers who continue their pregnancy, give a birth and care their children. They consider themselves responsible for their children. the criticism and stigmatization of single mothers, the number of single mothers is increasing. They consider themselves responsible for giving childbirth and caring child alone. This research questions of this study are as follows: How did the research participants became single mothers? What are the single mothers’ experiences at the time of pregnancy? What are the main themes of single mothers’ experiences of childbirth and caring? This study conducted in-depth interviews with six single mothers. To focus on the adult single mothers’experiences, this study included the research participants who were more than 20 years old at the time pregnancy. The study participants gave birth to their children when they were more than 24 years old and have been caring their children. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, the research participants became single mothers as they choose their children and rearrange their relationship with their children’s biological fathers. There existed diverse ways that the research participants rearranged the relationship. Sometimes the biological fathers rearranged the relationship as they did not show up and did not keep appointments. Other times women initiated the break up. Second, single mothers were exposed to isolated situations at the time of pregnancy. They experiences isolation in different ways, most of them felt difficult to obtain emotional support and to share childbirth or abortion information or opinion on their pregnancy situations, and were deeply involved in financial and material difficulties. Thirds the main issues that the single mothers faced were to arrange a place to live with their children and to balance work and care of their children. The more available resources the single mothers had, the easier they resolved the main issues. The resources, specifically, included someone who could provide the single mothers with child care. In case, the single mothers had little resources, they had hard time to balance work and care. They preferred preparing or planning for the future to immediate employment. In conclusion, although there were some differences in the time and process of experiencing according to the levels of their social support and resources and also their backgrounds and characteristics of each research participant, the research participant were experiencing in common. The case that the single mothers experienced isolation most tended not to have close relationship with social support network members but to have limited relationship only with children’s biological fathers at the time of pregnancy, lack of resources that could provided them with the place to live with their children, and exclusion from the economic activities due to lack of available resources to help balance work and care of their children.
