루게릭병 환자를 위한 줄기세포 연구, 환자에게 통증을 유발할 수 있음 [7월 1일]
근위축성 측색 경화증(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), 즉 루게릭병을 앓고 있는 환자의 척수에 줄기세포를 주입하는 치료가 항상 안전하지만은 않다는 연구가 보고됨. 연구 담당자는 에모리 의대 신경학 및 병리학과(neurology and pathology at the Emory University School of Medicine) 소속 교수이자 에모리 루게릭 센터(Emory ALS Center)장을 맡고 있는 조나단 글래스(Jonathan D. Glass) 박사였음.
조나단 글래스 박사가 진행한 연구는 루게릭병을 앓고 있는 환자 15명을 대상으로 했음. 불행히도 줄기세포 주입 치료는 환자들의 병세에 별다른 도움이 되지 못했음. 실험에 참여한 환자들 중 2명은 심각한 고통을 겪었음.
해당 연구는 실험 시작 전에 인간 대상 연구의 윤리적 문제에 대한 검토 과정을 거쳤음. 임상 시험 과정에 미국 국립보건원(NIH, National Institutes of Health), 식품의약품국(FDA, Food and Drug Administration), 대학의 기관생명윤리위원회(IRPB, Institutional Review Board) 등이 윤리적 검토를 담당했음.
하지만 앞서 언급 했듯이 실험에 참여한 두 명의 환자는 심각한 고통을 겪었음. 루게릭 치료 개발 연구원(ALS Therapy Development Institute)의 부회장인 로버트 골드스테인(Robert Goldstein)은 실험 참가자들을 의학적 영웅으로 간주해야 한다고 말함. 줄기세포 치료는 아직까지 의학적으로 완전하지 않는 치료방법이기 때문에 실험 참가자 자신들에게는 도움이 되지 않을 수 있음. 그러나 인간 대상 연구의 목표는 명료함. 그것은 미래의 환자들에게 효과적이고 안전한 치료 방법을 제공하는 것임.

Stem cell research can run the gamut from Nobel Prize-winning scientists to hucksters in lab coats making a buck off desperate, seriously ill people. The results of one new study may be less than hoped for, but the science is sound: The study concluded that injecting stem cells into the spinal cords of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is safe in most, though not all, cases. Unfortunately, the procedure provided no benefit to patients, though it caused substantial pain to two of the study participants.........
