배아 검사(Embryo screening)가 유전적 질병을 지닌 아이의 출산을 피할 수 있게 도와줌 [5월 31일]
노스웨스턴 대학 페인버그 의대의 부인과 의학과 생식 내분비학 및 불임 의학과(obstetrics and gynecology-reproductive endo & infertility at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine) 소속 조교수인 제래드 로빈스(Jared Robbins) 박사는 “착상 전 유전자 검사가 정상적인 염색체를 지닌 배아를 선별함으로써 착상 확률을 높일 수 있다”고 밝힘.
질병관리본부(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)에 따르면 미국의 경우 33명의 태아 중 한 명이 유전적 질병으로 인한 선천적 결손증(birth defects)을 지님. 배아 검사를 이용하면 염색체 이상이 있는 태아의 착상을 제한할 수 있음.
의사들은 임신 전 진단 기술은 맞춤아기(designer baby)와 관련이 없다고 주장함. 그들은 이 기술이 가계에 대물림되는 유전병을 예방하고 근치할 수 있다고 말함.
로빈스 박사에 따르면 착상 전 유전자 검사는 환자가 좋은 배아를 가졌을 때만 임신을 하도록 유도할 수 있음. 그는 “착상 전 배아 검사 기술은 최적의 배아를 선택하여 환자들이 빠르게 임신할 수 있도록 돕는 것”이라고 강조함.
