캐나다, 조력 자살이 합법이지만 조력 자살을 택하는 사람의 수는 알려져 있지 않음 [9월 6일]
캐나다에서 말기 환자가 의사나 간호사의 도움 하에 죽음을 택할 수 있도록 허락하는 새로운 연방 법이 통과된 이후, 이번 여름에만 수 백 명의 환자들이 조력 자살(assisted suicide)을 선택했음.
죽을 권리(right-to-die)를 강조하는 활동가들은 연방 정부가 의사 조력 자살을 선택하는 사람의 수를 제대로 파악하고 있지 못하다고 지적함. 6월에 통과된 연방 법은 정부가 조력 자살을 한 환자의 수를 기록하도록 요구하고 있지만 이는 제대로 지켜지고 있지 않음.
CBC에 따르면 법이 통과된 이후 온타리오(Ontario)와 브리티쉬 콜럼비아(British Columbia)에서만 적어도 100명의 말기 환자들이 조력 자살을 택했음. 그러나 다른 지역에서는 제대로 된 자료를 제공하고 있지 않음.
캐나다 존엄사(Dying with Dignity Canada)의 CEO인 샤나즈 고쿨(Shanaaz Gokool)씨는 정부가 의사 조력 자살 환자의 수를 제대로 파악해야한다고 주장함. 특히 그는 의사 조력 자살을 선택 할 수 없는 완화 치료(palliative care) 환자들이 스스로 목숨을 끊는 사례들도 데이터에 포함 시킬 필요가 있다고 말함.

Hundreds of Canadians have chosen to die with medical assistance this summer after a new federal law made it legal for adults with terminal illness to end their lives with the assistance of a doctor or nurse practitioner. And yet right-to-die activists are concerned the federal government isn’t adequately tracking the numbers of patients that have chosen a medically-supervised death. The assisted dying law, passed in June, requires the federal government to keep track of the numbers of Canadians who undergo doctor-assisted deaths but it hasn’t yet done so........
