초록[abstracts]
The cultivation areas of GMOs, and the production and marketing of GM foods are increasing rapidly to solve the food security problems and to improve environment of the 21st century. Many countries in the world began to enforce the labeling regulations for Genetically Modified foods to ensure consumer's right-to-know and right-to-choose. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to alleviate the consumers' concerns regarding the safety aspects of Genetically Modified foods by providing the improvement plan for the current labeling system in Korea in comparison of with other countries' situations. First of all, the food items subject to labeling requirements should be extended gradually to provide accurate information to consumers such as food additives used for manufacturing and processing of food products and restaurants should be required to declare whether they use any GM foods. Extensive review on verification and detection methods regarding Identity Preservedhandling systems should be performed to prevent consumers from misconception and confusion as the current regulation allows adventitious threshold level and possibility of increasing the cost to verify the use of 100% Non-GMOs. In addition, the continued efforts to ensure consumers' right-to-know by providing the accurate information and training opportunities on GM foods. Efforts to have the IP related contracts with exporting countries and the establishment of efficient, unified and coordinated systems among different government agencies should be exercised. Otherwise, the overall coordination and information sharing systems among agencies should be established to enforce the GM labeling system and to ensure post market monitoring and management.
