국문 초록[abstracts]
본 논문에서는 쿤데라의 대표작으로 간주되는 두 편의 장편소설 『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움』과 『불멸』을 개인정체성의 문제를 중심으로 비교하려고 한다. 이론적 준거로는, 데카르트의 '거리를 둔 자아'와 루소 이후 '낭만적 표현주의'의 자아 모델을 근대이후 유럽문화에서 쌍벽을 이루는 자아의 두 패러다임으로 규정한 철학자 찰스 테일러의 저작을 주로 참조했다. 『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움』의 주인공 테레사에게 있어 우위를 이루는 것은 낭만적 표현주의의 자아 모델이다. 자신의 유일무이한 영혼을 표현함으로써 자아실현을 이루려는 테레사의 시도는 거듭해서 장애에 부딪힌다. 그녀의 표현주의적 기획의 좌절은 영혼과 육체의 이원성이라는 인간의 근본적인 조건을 가리키는 동시에 전체주의 사회에서 인간의 탈개인화와 무차별화에 대한 고발의 성격을 가지고 있다. 『불멸』의 주인공 아녜스는 데카르트의 거리를 둔 자아의 모델에 가깝다. 그녀는 고립된 채 외부세계로부터 거리를 두고 자아의 본질을 탐구한다. 『불멸』에서 데카르트적인 육체기계론의 전면화는 인간 존재의 비극적 이원성과 관련된 쿤데라의 비관주의의 심화를 보여준다. 그것은 동시에 육체숭배와 자아실현을 동일시하고 개성을 육체적 특징으로 환원하는, 낭만적 표현주의 패러다임의 왜곡 현상에 대한 비판이기도 하다. 셀프카메라와 바디 스타일링, 성형이 보편화되고 스크린과 CCTV가 편재하는 오늘날 육체 숭배로서의 자아 숭배에 대한 쿤데라의 비판과 개인의 자율성의 위기에 대한 그의 경고는 여전히 현재성을 가지고 있다. 하지만 『불멸』에서 자아의 우상 금지가 육체와 이미지의 물신화에 대한 비판이라고 해도 주인공의 극단적인 내면지향성에서 자아 실체화의 위험이 보이는 것도 사실이다.
다국어 초록[Multilingual Abstract]
As is well known, the czech writer Milan Kundera has been settled in France since 1977 after leaving his country under the repression of the regime. Kundera's work is generally divided into three periods based on exile. His representative novels The Book of Laughter and Oblivion (1978), The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1982) and Immortality (1988) belong to the second period. The continuity and discontinuity of Kunderas oeuvre is especially evident between the last two novels. These novels were written in France, where he is an asylum, but are in Czech. The former is based on the Czech Republic, while the background of the latter is France. However, we can not overlook the commonality of two novels: both deal with the issue of personal identity centered on the relationship between human self and body. They have also similarities in motifs. In this paper, I try to compare two novels, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Immortality, mainly on the issue of personal identity. The theoretical basis is the work of the philosopher Charles Taylor. According to his theory, it is the Cartesian model of the disengaged self and the self-model of romantic expressivism after Rousseau that shaped European culture since the modern era. It is the self-model of romantic expressivism that dominates with Teresa, the heroin of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Theresa's attempts to achieve self-realization by expressing his unique soul face repeatedly obstacles. The frustration of her expressivistic project indicate the duality of soul and body as human fundamental condition. At the same time, it has the character of accusation of depersonalization and indiscrimination of human in totalitarian society. Agnes, the protagonist of Immortality is close to the Cartesian self-model. She is isolated and explores the essence of the self in the distance from the outside world. The emphasis of Cartesian mechanical body-view shows Kundera's pessimism in relation to the tragic duality of human existence. It is also a critique of the distorted form of the romantic expressivism that equates self-realization with body-cult and reduces personal identity to physical characteristics. Kundera's criticism of body-cult and image-fetishism and his warnings about the crisis of individual autonomy are still relevant today, where self-camera, body styling, and cosmetic surgery are commonplace, and screen and cctv are ubiquitous. However, even if the iconoclasm of the self in Immortality is a reaction to the fetishization of the body and the image, it is also true that the danger of the substantialization of the self cann be seen in the extreme inner-direction of the main character.
