영화 「안토니아스 라인」 에 제시된 생태여성주의적 인간 공동체 연구

(Multilingual Abstract) Erich Pinchas Fromm says that a person who respects life is not mechanical but functional, and free from the process of life itself and unconstrained in the process of growth, which enables to be attracted from many directions. This supports the idea of love of life that, by preferring the entire structural and the overall part to a part, he dislikes to be oppressed by violence, as well as selects new adventures, rather than retaining the existing things.
As a new reflection of the meaning of women and their life in terms of the framework of eco-feminism, escaping from the critical perspective, which is of conventional feminism, this study can be regarded as a challenge to the existing paradigm through a 'liberal and even subjective life' by the women's community, including heroine Antonia. In this context of mental alertness that awakens 'living' rather than conforming to such invisible oppression, this study examined in the theoretical review the ideas of John Ruskin and William Morris, who opposed mechanization and criticized the oppression against workers and the subjugated classes as well as their disastrous reality at the time of modern industrialization in the nineteenth century as an example. They emphasized 'organic relations' based on the society, the environment and the human existence along with the spontaneity of human labor, and it could be understood that their thought was the realization of humanity based on 'wholeness'. Like the social theorists in the 19th century who criticized the oppression against workers on the basis of humanity, Antonia in the movie also was describing the healthy and joyful figure of alternative society, while embracing the oppressed village peoples.
Antonia is like a hyper-historical existence that represents a cyclical life as the naturalism. The movie shows the process during which the village people, who were oppressed under the existing deep-rooted world, are entering into world of the women power around her as they return to Antonia's arms. Exactly, for those who were being oppressed, the value of life to remind them that ‘they were alive’ would be necessary, and Antonia just became this character who cut across the world while breaking the framework. In addition, the dying of Antonia at the last moment implies that the death is not the end with her death. It could be found that Antonia's view of the world appears in her speech, 'There is nothing that ever dies forever, that's where something new is born’.
Antonia creates a new culture, and her granddaughter Sarah implies the hope for a new beginning and aspiration at the same time. According to the inner motive that they desired by themselves, like themselves, in self-attitude and forced to do so, they lived by their existence. And, at the center of that was Antonia, who created a ‘common plan of humanity’ that overcame the organization of oppression by nullifying the words of reality, power, and oppression.
This study has concluded from the analysis frame of perspective view of ecological feminism that the movie indicated ideally what eco-feminism pursues.
Furthermore, a 'consciousness of community', which is called as 'subjective life and harmony', and ‘coexistence and harmony’, influenced Antonia's character formation. In this study, it is confirmed that such an influence would affect the future of humanity, and as a hope that women themselves regain their identity and expand it, it would be possible to realize a 'sustainable community'.
국문 초록 (Abstract)
에리히 프롬(Erich Pinchas Fromm)은 생명을 존중하는 사람은 기계적이지 않고 기능적이며 삶의 과정자체로부터 자유로움과 얽매이지 않는 여러 방향의 성장과정에서 끌림을 받는다고 말한다. 이는 부분이 아닌 구조 전체와 총체적인 부분을 선호함으로써 기존의 것을 유지하기보다는 새로운 모험과 함께 폭력에 의해 억압받는 것을 좋아하지 않는다는 생명애호 사상을 뒷받침한다.
본 연구는 종래의 여성주의에서 비평적인 시각에서 벗어나 여성과 삶의 의미를 생태여성주의 틀로 새롭게 조명한 것으로 여성주인공 안토니아를 비롯한 그녀들의 여성공동체가 ‘자유분방하고도 주체적인 삶’을 통해 기존의 패러다임에 도전한 시도라 볼 수 있겠다.
이렇듯 보이지 않은 억압에 순응하기보다 ‘살아있음’을 일깨우는 정신적 각성의 맥락에서 이론적 고찰에서는 19세기의 근대 산업화시기를 예로, 당시 기계화에 반대하며 비참한 현실과 함께 노동자들과 피지배계층의 억압을 비판했던 존 러스킨과 윌리엄모리스의 사상 또한 살펴보았다. 그들은 인간 노동의 자발성과 더불어 사회와 환경 그리고 인간의 존재에 기반 한 ‘유기적 관계’를 중요시 하였으며 이러한 그들의 정신이란 ‘전인성’을 바탕으로 한 인간애의 실현이었음을 알 수 있었다. 인간애를 바탕으로 노동자들의 억압을 비판했던 19세기 사회적 사상가들처럼 영화 속 안토니아 또한 억압받던 마을사람들을 포용하며 대안사회의 건강하고 유쾌한 모습을 그리고 있었다.
안토니아는 자연주의로서 순환적 삶을 대변하는 초역사적인 존재와도 같다. 영화는 기존의 뿌리박혀있는 세계에 억눌려있던 마을 사람들이 안토니아의 품으로 들어오면서 그녀를 중심으로 하는 여성의 힘의 세계로 변해가는 과정을 보여준다. 바로 억눌려있던 그들에게는 ‘살아있음’을 일깨워줄 수 있는 삶의 가치가 필요했을 것이고 바로 그 틀을 깨고 가로질러가는 인물이 안토니아였던 것이다. 그리고 마지막 안토니아의 임종은 그녀의 죽음과 함께 그 죽음은 끝이 아니라는 것을 암시한다. 그것은 바로 ‘그 어떤 것도 영원히 죽는 것은 없단다, 바로 그곳에서 어떤 새로운 것이 탄생하지.’라는 그녀의 대사에서 안토니아의 세계관이 나타나는 것이다.
안토니아는 새로운 문화를 창조했고 증손녀 사라는 새로운 시작이자 염원에 대한 희망인 것이다. 스스로가 원하고 자기답게, 자기다운 면을 찾아 그렇게 될 수밖에 없는 내적동기에 따라 그녀들은 존재자체로 삶을 살아갔다. 그리고 그 중심에는 현실과 권력 그리고 억압이라는 말을 무산시킴으로서 억압의 구도를 뛰어넘는 ‘인간 공통의 기획’을 창조한 안토니아가 있었다.
본 연구는 생태여성주의 관점에서 분석한 틀로 영화에는 에코페미니즘이 추구하는 바가 이상적으로 드러나 있음을 살펴볼 수 있었다.
‘주체적인 삶과 조화’, 그리고 공존과 화합이라는 ‘공동체의식’이 안토니아의 공간형성에 있어 영향을 주었고 이는 앞으로 나아갈 인간의 전망에 영향을 줄 것이라는 하나의 희망으로서 여성들 스스로가 자신들의 정체성을 회복하고 이를 확장시킬 때 바로 여기서 ‘지속가능한 공동체’가 가능하다는 사실을 확인시키고 있었다.
