In The Metaphysics of Morals Kant calls ‘an end that is also a duty’ as duty of virtue and he considers the doctrine of virtue to be the moral doctrine of ends. The purpose of this study is to find out the features of the doctrine of virtue as the moral doctrine of ends and to understand the doctrine of virtue within the whole system of Kant’s moral philosophy. For this I shall grasp the concept of virtue as the capacity and the considered resolve to choose and pursue moral ends and then I shall look into the possibility and operation of the moral ends. And I shall explore the practical roles of ends in terms of the relation between ends and motives and identify the doctrine of virtue to be the moral doctrine of motives. In the doctrine of virtue as the moral doctrine of motives ends play a role in relating will to emotion. The doctrine of virtue shows that acting from duty is not the blind obedience of the moral law but the free choice of rational being. Then I shall explore the theoretical roles which ends have in relation to value and the way how consequences are taken into account in the doctrine of virtue as the value theory based on deontology. The examination of this paper reveals that ends in the doctrine of virtue have both the theoretical and the practical roles and that the doctrine of virtue as the moral doctrine of ends is both the moral doctrines of motives and value which deal with the morality of rational natural beings.
국문 초록[abstracts]
칸트는 도덕형이상학에서 의무인 동시에 목적인 것을 덕의무라고 하고, 덕의무를 다루는 덕론을 도덕적 목적이론으로 설명한다. 본 논문에서는 칸트의 덕론에서 목적이 하는 역할을 통해 도덕적 목적이론으로서 덕론이 가지는 성격을 고찰하고 덕론이 칸트윤리학 체계에서 어떻게 이해되는지를 고찰한다. 이를 위해 먼저 덕의 개념을 살펴보면서 덕이 도덕적 목적을 선택하고 추구하는 결의와 능력임을 보이고 이러한 목적의 가능성과 작용을 살펴본다. 그리고 목적과 동기의 관련성을 탐색하면서 목적의 실천적인 역할과 덕론이 가지는 도덕적 동기이론으로서의 성격을 확인한다. 도덕적 동기이론으로서 덕론에서 목적은 의지와 감정의 결합에 작용하며 의무로부터의 행위는 도덕법칙에 대한 맹목적인 복종이 아니라 이성적 존재의 자유로운 자의에 따른 수행으로 드러난다. 나아가서 가치에 관련되는 목적의 이론적 역할을 살펴보고 의무론에 근거한 가치이론으로서의 덕론에서 결과가 고려되는 방식을 확인한다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 도덕적 목적이론으로 제시되는 덕론은 이성적 자연존재의 도덕성을 다루는, 도덕적 동기이론이자 도덕적 가치이론으로서의 역할을 한다는 것을 규명한다.
