   지난 2월 이후 지금까지 30명의 알버타 주민이 의사 조력 자살로 생을 마감했음. 일부는 집에서, 일부는 병원에서 의사 조력 자살 절차를 진행했음. 이들은 루게릭 병, 혹은 희귀 암 질환을 앓고 있던 환자들이었음.  

  알버타 주의 보건부(Albert Health Service)는 의사 조력 자살 서비스를 수요에 맞게 제공하기 위해 노력 중임. 

  의사 조력 자살 관련 의료 서비스를 제공하고 있는 제임스 실비어스(James Silvius) 박사는 의사 조력 자살을 원하는 사람들의 수에 놀랐다고 함. 그는 의사 조력 자살 서비스를 위해 어떤 자원들이 필요한지 고민하고 있다고 밝힘. 

  지난 2월 6일부터 캐나다 대법원은 일정 절차를 거칠 경우 의사 조력 자살을 허용할 수 있도록 법을 개정했음. 이후 일부 환자들이 의사 조력 자살로 생을 마감했지만 연방 정부의 기준에 맞지 않아 의사 조력 자살 서비스를 받지 못한 사람도 23명에 달함. 연방 정부는 치료 불가능한 의료적 상태, 합리적으로 판단했을 때 환자의 죽음이 예상되는 경우, 입각한 정보에 의한 동의가 이루어진 경우 등을 기준으로 제시하고 있음. 

  의사 조력 자살을 담당하는 의사나 간호사들은 “감정적으로 힘든 결정”을 내려야 함. 실비어스 박사는 이것이 의사 조력 자살 서비스를 제공하는데 있어 큰 걸림돌이라 밝힘. 또한 실비어스 박사는 만족스러운 의사 조력 자살 서비스를 제공하기 위한 전략을 모색 중이라고 전함.

Since February almost 30 Albertans have made the decision to end their lives with the help of a physician. Some deciding to conduct the procedures in their homes, others in the hospital. Some suffer from ALS, others rare forms of cancer. No two of these choices are the same. The only constant that exists is the decision. It’s a decision that is being made more than was expected in the province. Alberta Health Service officials are struggling to keep up with the demand for physician-assisted deaths.........
